The state boundaries are drawn to the U.S. coastline and does not include any coastline or islands. The state boundaries does not extend beyond the shoreline and therefore does not represent state water territories. This data layer was created so it could be used to indicate state boundaries when used with the high resolution NOS80K coastline (allus80k.shp) which does not include any internal boundaries.</purpose><supplinf>This dataset was created to be used with the NOS80K coastline (allus80k.shp) to provide state bounds. In creating the data layer, some issues of the NOS80K coastline became apparent. One example, is the US/Mexico boundary. The NOS80K coastline closes and draws a straight line well below the Texas border. The same type of problem can be seen around the US/Canada boundary of the Great Lakes. The state_bounds.shp will draw the political boundaries while the allus80k.shp file will display the U.S. beyond the political boundaries. If this is unacceptable to the user, they should consider masking the annexed U.S. possession.</supplinf></descript><citation><citeinfo><origin>Valerie Paskevich</origin><pubdate>2005</pubdate><title>STATE_BOUNDS: internal United States (US) boundaries</title><ftname Sync="TRUE">state_bounds</ftname><geoform Sync="TRUE">vector digital data</geoform><onlink>http://coastalmap.marine.usgs.gov/GISdata/basemaps/boundaries/state_bounds/state_bounds.zip</onlink><edition>1.0</edition></citeinfo></citation><timeperd><current>publication date</current><timeinfo><sngdate><caldate>20021004</caldate></sngdate></timeinfo></timeperd><status><progress>Complete</progress><update>None planned</update></status><spdom><bounding><westbc Sync="TRUE">-124.211606</westbc><eastbc Sync="TRUE">-67.158958</eastbc><northbc Sync="TRUE">49.384359</northbc><southbc Sync="TRUE">25.837377</southbc></bounding><lboundng><leftbc Sync="TRUE">-124.211606</leftbc><rightbc Sync="TRUE">-67.158958</rightbc><bottombc Sync="TRUE">25.837377</bottombc><topbc Sync="TRUE">49.384359</topbc></lboundng></spdom><keywords><theme><themekt>General</themekt><themekey>U.S. Geological Survey</themekey><themekey>USGS</themekey><themekey>Coastal and Marine Geology Program</themekey><themekey>CMGP</themekey><themekey>Woods Hole Science Center</themekey><themekey>Geographic Information System</themekey><themekey>GIS</themekey><themekey>ArcView shapefile</themekey><themekey>polyline</themekey><themekey>state bounds</themekey><themekey>US and Canada boundary</themekey><themekey>US and Mexico boundary</themekey><themekey>internal boundaries</themekey></theme><place><placekey>contiguous 48 United States</placekey><placekt>General</placekt><placekey>United States</placekey><placekey>US</placekey><placekey>North America</placekey></place><theme><themekt>ISO 19115 Topic Category</themekt><themekey>boundaries</themekey></theme></keywords><accconst>None</accconst><natvform Sync="TRUE">Shapefile</natvform><ptcontac><cntinfo><cntperp><cntper>Valerie Paskevich</cntper><cntorg>U.
